Kilpatrick was a darling. Not even 38 years old, he was the mayor of a major city, a position he first won at 32 years old. He has broad shoulders that would fit in fine at Lions practice. Could he have been a Senator one day? Or more?
Not anymore. What ifs aren’t useful. They are mostly just depressing. He jumped on his old friend and chief of staff Christine Beatty. Over and over. I saw some pictures of her. First, of all, I’m not impressed. Second of all, he’s known her since they were kids. If he’d preferred her, he had his chance.
It’s dangerous when officials begin to think that they are invincible. It was said about Spitzer and it’s been said about Kilpatrick and it’s true. The problem with control is that once a person has to keep a another important person waiting, he or she starts to like it. That control is fun. It’s not vindictive exactly, it’s entertainment.
“Guess what I did to the CEO of GM today?”
That’s the sort of attitude that starts the chain reaction. Control is the evil little friend of Power. Control is the reason Power corrupts. It isn’t power for the sake of power, it’s power for the sake of making the little puppets dance in a line. And dance they will.
It’s important for those in power to distance themselves somewhat to the direct relationship that their choices have to real people. If each bad outcome were told the the President, he/she would just sit there in the Oval Office and never move and never sign anything. There is nothing, absolutely nothing that a person with the power of a large city mayor or governor can do without negatively affecting someone somewhere. It is inevitable, so they can’t just think about that.
But they must think about it sometimes. It should sober their actions, make them yearn to relinquish the control sometimes. But then they should realize that they wouldn’t want any one else to do this, that he/she trusts his or herself to make the right decision. Never forget the little guy. Don’t make decisions just to help the little guy, but don’t forget that the little guy gets hurt more than you ever will.
Kilpatrick may actually be invincible. One great thing about having to resign is that by that time you’ve made some money and there will be numerous lucrative job opportunities. Spitzer can write a book and be on boards of directors pretty fast.
Then again, there are potential criminal charges against each. They thought that they had the control. They thought that the world only knew what they wanted people to know. Reporters are smart. I’m sure the city hall reporters all knew what was going on and one happened to stumble upon the right evidence and then make a brilliant FOIA request.
Sex is good. Rationality is better. The rational decision is that when such a situation comes up to push back from the table and count your chips. But they always think that the other person at the table is letting them win. That’s true, but there’s a third guy at the table, and that guy doesn’t care about the others winning or losing, just playing as best he can.
Sorry, Kwame. Goodnight.
